For a student project, to create something inherently new in the world of bicycle design, is quite a challenge. This is why I started from a clean slate and developed the design based on the idea of a CNC-bent bicycle frame.

The project started with a research trip to a bicycle manufacturing plant in Austria.
Seeing how bicycles are assembled provided a better understanding of what keeps the wheels turning in the world of a bicycle manufacturer.

What if it was possible to bend the frame?
The project took off with one crazy idea.
Small mock ups fueled the ideation and were key to set the direction for the rest of the process.

Photoshop renderings were used to develop the look and feel of the bicycle.

Modelmaking has to deliver new insights to my design process to be justified. During this project this was my personal approach. I had the choice to either show the bike as a scale model or to make a rough mock up of its core element: the frame. As being shown, I chose the latter.

A new way of reducing frame production cost and bringing the whole production back to Austria?
While presenting to the collaboration partner, I demonstrated the assembly of the mirrored frame design with inserted magnets.

City bikes should not only be designed for riding.
From my own experience in an urban environment, the frame should not only be able to hold its rider, but also be designed for being carried.

This idea was a core part of the project from early on.

To develop the CAD model Rhino and Solidworks was used.
